JCL2 – Sharks2 vs Sano2, Sano 4, 6/9/13
By Ryan Peters
I am writing the match report at home before dinner, indicating an earlier than expected finishing time today. Not all bad news as we are less sun-stricken and can spend more time with our families before the weekend is finished. Now to the game. As expected, Sano provided inescapable sunshine and heat, the mercury pushing 30 degrees before noon. The Sharks turned out with Chris T as skipper, Murad, Ryan, Sayeed, Tsubasa, Rui, Rockey, Dave R, Takuma, Moto and Mairaj. Atharva also gamely played as 12th man.
Chris won the toss and chose to bat. Batting first proved successful last game and Chris and Murad got off to a promising start, punishing anything loose with boundaries. After Murad went out, we lost a few quick wickets without troubling the scorers too much – for myself, a golden duck; consistent with current worldwide Australian form.Sayeed then joined Chris at the crease at a time when we needed steady hands and a defensive mindset. Instead, we saw a boundary-fest. In particular, Chris showed again how invaluable he is to the team; it was a real Captain’s knock.
Chris bowed out on 77, followed soon by Sayeed. (Ed’s note – Bit of Triv: Which bird has the biggest span? The Vulture? Well at 2.8 metres that’s not a bad bet. The Andean Condor is an impressive beast at about 3.4 meters. Not even close though – the bird with the biggest span ever recorded is (or was) the Dave Rear Duck with a span of just over 2 years! This seemingly immortal creature was rendered extinct by Dave plundering 1 off 1 before getting run out, but ending with a Strike Rate of 100). From there, we lost the rest of the wickets cheaply, and were all out for 139 after 25 overs. Not an ideal situation, but not an impossible one either.

Given the score, we needed to bowl well and get some quick wickets to add much needed pressure. Unfortunately, it was a tough wicket for the bowlers today from the get-go. (Ed’s note – Bit more Triv: What comes in 57 varieties? 57? You know this one …….yes! BEANS! – Heinz Baked Beans!! Yes. What else? Thats it! Wides. Sharks Bowled Wides.) Wides haunted us the whole innings, with a disappointing total of 57 wides (that is not a typo) and 7 no balls. Two wickets fell early but the next partnership saw the opposition reach the target after only 22 overs. Special mention though to Rockey and Murad who steadied the ship with excellent bowling spells, and were very unlucky not to get any dismissals.

A lot can be learned from this game. Mostly, we need to practice more. We won’t win too many games with that many extras on the bowling card. Personally, I plan on bowling a few at the wall in the park before next game. Having said that, it is early in the season, and we have a lot of improvements to look forward to over summer. I’m confident we’ll bounce back next game. Many thanks to the umpires, to Atharva for playing as 12th man and to Sano 2 for good match.
